Students take out your iphones - the class will start now
It’s Sunday night. Weekend is over and after a good night’s sleep, it’s back to school once again. He prepares his things for school the next day.
- 1. Homework and reports are done.
- 2. Lessons have been reviewed.
- 3. All notebooks and books are in the bag.
- 4. The iPhone is…
Wait. An iPhone? What’s it got to do with school stuff?
Well, here is one reason why school is cool.
Contrary to other schools and universities, teachers in a Japanese university require their students to bring their smart phones as part of their school materials. Oh, wait, did I forget to mention that it is not just any smart phone? Yes! These students are actually required to use the iPhone.
While I had to hide my phone, put it on silent mode and occasionally put my hand inside the phone to send an SMS while pretending to listen to my teacher, the students in this university, can just walk in, sit on their chairs and hold their iPhones in their palms as if it were a calculator for their mathematics class.
A partnership has been signed between this university in Tokyo and the authorized Exclusive vendor of Apple in Japan, SoftBank. Asiajin reported that students in Aoyama Gakuin University in Japan are given iPhones for free. Well, of course, students are still not encouraged to send SMS to their friends or to call a delivery service to order Japanese maki for lunch. These iPhones are still going to be used to carry out classroom activities and requirements such as viewing lecture podcasts. But still, being allowed to use the phone in the room is cool. And it being a free iPhone makes it so much cooler.
This is also as a means of checking students’ class attendance. Way back when GPS were mere letters of the alphabet, teachers had to call every students name before class to check who is in and who is not. Apparently, students’ absenteeism has been a constant problem among the student population. The GPS in the iPhone is the university’s way of checking the students’ attendance.
In early May of this year, there are already 550 iPhones distributed to students and yes staff members; for who else will check the attendance but them. It is expected that more will receive them at the start of the new semester.
Hmm, I think I need to go now and enroll.

Senior Vice President of iPhone Software Engineering, Scott Forstall, on the other hand, particularized that developers are now presented with one of the iPhone OS 3.0 improvements which is the App and Developer Functionality that hits off with an updated Software Development Kit (SDK) with over 1,000 absolutely new APIs. This improvement is designed to be of assistance to developers in order for them to craft splendid apps and to allow them to have a certified line of attack to put on the market extra content in a straight line from an app. Devices will also be able to border hardware accessories unswervingly to their application and with the help of another feature of the iPhone OS which is the Maps, developers will also be able to generate apps that can call out and embed Google Maps functionality in their applications with complete interactions. Also jam-packed within the App and Developer Functionality of the iPhone OS is the peer-to-peer connectivity via Bluetooth and Bonjour support. The Apple Iphone camera features are unimaginably impressive from that of an ordinary camera phone because of its 2 megapixel capability, fabulous image management software, its ability to sync with images on your computer set and the fact that you are able to send those images to your friends over the web! Although its 2 megapixel ability is not that hot in terms of quality, it is way better than the basic 1.3 megapixels image management software that many camera phones have which usually have only the ability to review, delete and save images. And despite this fact, it is still included on the top 10 list of camera phones sold on the market.
Among the high-end software features that the Iphone is capable of are the playlist-like galleries of images based on the subject, the ability to crop and send changes on the phone’s right on-screen, using the photos as wallpaper and send them through email to friends or just assign them to a phonebook contact. And instead of squinting at tiny images, the 3.5 inch display screen actually allows you to see your photos on-screen.
One of its key features is also its capability to sync with your computer to be able to move images into the phone. With its choices for storage capability 4GB, 8GB and 16 GB, you can actually hold a decent number of images especially if the captures are not from a high-end camera or images that have been resized. Images can also be shared not only through SMS or MMS Text Messaging but instead, through several mail options. An on-screen keyboard is also available for typing messages. Among the POP email accounts with email services are Yahoo! Mail, Microsoft Exchange, Apple Mac Mail, AOL Mail and Google Mail respectively.
